New Zealand Theatre Month

This is  to let you know about New Zealand Theatre Month planned for September 2018.
We are  approaching theatres and theatre groups now so as to give everyone plenty of time to plan.

The main aim is to get as many theatres (professional and community) putting on New Zealand work some time during that September.

Almost all the other arts have celebrated and publicised their own field with a month, a week, a day. But theatre never has.
Theatre in New Zealand has never been so strong.  The amount of work produced and the number of venues have never been so high. But the vast majority of people have no idea of what is happening.
I never sense a national pride in what we do. In recent times.  Media attention to theatre is dwindling.
And when did any museum put on a display about NZ Theatre? They should;  our history goes back to Victorian times.
We don’t seem to have a national voice.

As well as NZ work being presented, I hope that many other activities will take place.
Displays of posters of NZ plays/ shows.
Panels, talks or displays highlighting the work of theatre skills such as set design wardrobe; lighting; sound; stage manager, digital etc.
Honouring our past theatre practitioners.
These are just some of the activities that are planned. We certainly anticipate media coverage.

NZTM will have its own web site.
Funding applications will start soon.
Some individuals have committed financial support.
Malcolm Calder has joined me as Administrator.
The intention is by the end of NZ Theatre Month,  people will be more aware of the amount and quality of NZ Theatre; and that there will be a greater sense of pride in what we do.

I know it is still early in the planning, but we sincerely hope your theatre will be part of New Zealand Theatre Month.
