Gisborne Theatres

Our theatres are suitable venues for seminars, weddings and any other community activity.  They are also the district's venues for performing and visual arts events.   Our theatres provide facilities to encourage and enable the public to experience the performing and visual arts, and to provide venues suitable for seminars, weddings and other community activities.

Lawson Field Theatre

The Lawson Field Theatre is an auditorium seating 200 with a function room seating 100. Well suited for conventions, conferences, seminars, weddings, productions and social functions catering for up to 200 people.  The Theatre is situated on the bank of the Taruheru River and within walking distance to the central city shopping centre.

War Memorial Theatre

The War Memorial Theatre is located in Bright Street close to the CBD.  It was built in the 1950s and is a traditional theatre with a raised stage, stall and upper circle.  The theatre seats 440 in total with 180 in the circle and 260 in the stalls.  This is a fully equipped small theatre with dressing rooms, properly equipped with lights and mirrors, toilet and kitchen facilities.

Upgrade of our Theatre
Although the current theatre is a great asset for the district, its size and condition are limiting the performances that can come to Gisborne and it has reached the point where it should be replaced so that the city has a first class facility for the next 30 years.  This upgrade is due to begin in 2013.

What we plan to do
Gisborne District Council is committed to fully upgrading the War Memorial Theatre on its current site in Bright Street.  The auditorium will be enlarged so it can seat more people. The improvements planned also include a full upgrade of the stage and backstage areas, a larger entrance, improved toilets and a modern kitchen area. The front of the theatre will be upgraded to bring it in line with modern theatres around the country.

Open Air Theatre

Gisborne District Council's outdoor theatre is located on Centennial Marine Drive opposite Midway Beach.  It's a sloping grassed amphitheatre with a stage and changing rooms. The capacity is approximately 5,000.
